[23 August 2011] Dukinfield Golf Club captain Steven Warburton described his PGA professional partner David Green as 'unbelievable' as he clinched a place in the prestigious Lombard Challenge in Turkey later in the year.
Warburton teamed up with Green in the north west qualifier for the PGA Pro-Captain tournament at the Cheshire venue of Dunham Forest. And the duo emerged victorious on countback after tying at the top of the leaderboard with Keswick Golf Club's Gary Watson and captain John Hartshorn after both pairs recorded nine under par rounds of 63.
They were one shot clear of Rhos on Sea Golf Club's Lee Harpin and captain John Leigh, and Turton Golf Golf Club's Sean Owen and captain Adam Bullough. Warburton and Green's better back nine ensured they booked a place in the £25,000 Lombard Challenge final which will be held at the PGA Sultan Course at Antalya Golf Club from November 25-26. Warburton admitted that Green had been outstanding for the Greater Manchester based club.
He said: "David made seven birdies in an unbelievable display so we thought we had a decent score.
"And he said to me after we came off the 18th that our back nine would have been enough to win it in the event of a tie and he was right.
"Now we're going to Turkey for the final which is tremendous. You try to go out and enjoy the day first, but winning was a great bonus.
"We had an early start and it had been a busy weekend as it was Captain's Day at Dukinfield on Saturday. But I felt fine and it was worth it."
Green added: "I felt I played really well and thought nine under par would be good enough.
"My captain had never played there before - but we finished really well and that's what won it.
"Turkey's a great prize for the winners; neither of us have played there before but everyone I know who's been there raves
about it. So we're really looking forward to the final now."
